The Gillette Area

Gillette, named after surveyor Edward Gillette, was established in 1892 as a railroad terminal, less than two years after Wyoming was made a state. It is located along I-90 in the Powder River Basin, between the Black Hills to the east and the Big Horn Mountains to the west. Cloud Peak Energy is based in Gillette, and indeed energy is central to the economy of the “Energy Capital of the Nation,” with vast quantities of coal, oil, and coalbed methane gas nearby.

Gillette is located in the middle of the Great Plains, and it is not uncommon to see bison, mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, and pronghorn in the high plains. Bird watchers will find turkeys, the northern sage grouse, burrowing owls, ferruginous hawks, prairie falcons, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, golden eagles, mountain bluebirds, the western meadowlark and many other species. You will find a wide variety geological formations as well as archeological sites in the Gillette area.
